Infertility: Why Social Workers Need to be Involved

Wednesday, August 6, 2025 - 12-1 p.m. CT via Zoom

Presenter: Steven Miller, APSW

1 CEU

With the recent court rulings in Alabama that consider embryos as children, this outcome caused clinics to pause IVF treatments. More states are considering the same legal action without protections for IVF treatments, leaving couples facing infertility without this family-building option. Infertility now impacts 1 in 6 people worldwide, with BIPOC women being 1.5-2 times more likely to experience infertility than their White counterparts. 73% of BIPOC women do not have access to fertility treatments. These statistics do not include those in the LGBTQ+ community, which have barriers to treatment, as well. This webinar will discuss the reasons why social workers should get involved in discussions about infertility, which include barriers to treatments for minority populations and legal implications for personhood bills and abortion bans related to infertility.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will develop a better understanding of barriers to family building for BIPOC and the LGBTQ+ communities

  2. Participants will learn at least 2 myths or misconceptions about infertility and minority populations

  3. Participants will learn how Personhood Bills and Abortion Bans impact access to family building
