This presentation will look at the role of religion in the African American community and the appeal of religiously abusive organizations. The characteristics of religiously abusive organizations will be discussed, along with case study examples of families who joined these organizations. The mental health ramifications of such organizations will be considered, in addition to cultural considerations and best practices for mental health professionals when working with families who have decided to leave a religiously abusive organization. Implications for professional practice and strategies to thoughtfully engage with families seeking cohesion and stronger relationships after leaving a religiously abusive organization will be examined.

About the Presenter
Alisha Powell is currently a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker working in private practice. Alisha has a Master’s degree in Social Work, as well as a Ph.D. in Social Psychology. Her areas of special practice include couples therapy, assessment, mental health and working with individuals in religiously abusive organizations.
