Social Workers as Leaders in Public Life

Presenters: Representative Hodan Hassan, MSW; and Representative Heather Edelson, MSW

Please join us for a discussion with guests Representatives Hodan Hassan and Heather Edelson, both social workers serving in our state House of Representatives. They will share insights on how their social work background informs them as policymakers and running campaigns. They will also discuss how social workers can get involved in policy and civic engagement. Any social workers in community practice,  or who are working in or interested in policy advocacy, community organizing, social welfare policy, or civic engagement should attend this webinar.

About the Presenters

Rep. Hassan (62A) is a single mom, immigrant, clinical social worker, and community activist. She worked as a Mental Health Clinician and Senior Clinical Social Worker for Hennepin County. This experience deeply impacted her as a person and her desire to help expand access to mental health services and affordable housing.

Rep. Edelson (49A) grew up in North Minneapolis, is a first-generation college graduate, mother, mental health therapist, and avid community leader. She spent years as an outpatient mental health therapist and Guardian ad Litem for child protection cases in Hennepin County, advocating for a child’s rights in court proceedings.

These webinars take place on the first Wednesday of the month from 12:00-1:00 p.m.
