Presenting an in-depth, nine-hour conference over three days on how to provide best practice telemental health (TMH) counseling; from the point of pre-screening clients for the appropriateness of this service delivery model, to assessment  individual sessions, and termination, including important ethical issues related to privacy and confidentiality using e-communication devices.

This program will provide you with experiential learning using best practice forms, templates, systems and structures to prepare you for engaging in ethical and competent TMH practice. 


All three days of the series will include interactive scenario analysis, interactive role playing, and the practice of techniques incorporating knowledge from the presentation of material.

You will also receive a workbook covering definitions, research, legal and ethical issues, delivery methods, theory integration, risk management, and more - written for the context of social work practice in Minnesota.


Course Objectives

  • Understand the definitions, provisions, and requirements for Telemental Health set forth by the Office of Health and Human Services; HSS (HIPAA and High-Tech Act, Final Omnibus Rule of March 2013); the guidelines set forth by NASW and other professional groups; and technical guidelines as established by the American Telemedicine Association and the International Society for Telemental Health Online.
  • Grasp the competencies necessary for providing ethical practice within today’s high-tech world including the use of cellular telephones, e-mails, video conferencing and related technologies.
  • Comprehend the importance of confidentiality of our clients' protected health information (PHI) to ensure maximum security while minimizing exposure to litigation for outdated practices and/or “willful neglect”.
  • Identify specific client groups that may necessitate the use of TeleMental Health services.
  • Know the indications and contraindications of client selections for possible provision of Distance Counseling services based on their diagnosis, technical skills and other important factors.
  • Comprehend the components of the ethical decision-making process, including stages and models of ethical decision-making, and the ethical decision process worksheet, as applied to the ethical use of Telemental Health services.
  • =Comprehend the essential back-up resources and systems necessary to conduct ethical distance counseling services.
  • Apply systematic approach to best practices in Telemental Health from point of first contact to point of termination.
  • Integrate important improvements in clinical protocols including but not limited to informed consent, client forms, releases of information, use of encrypted and unencrypted e-mails, and other important procedures for an effective and ethical practice.
  • Learn best practices in crisis management when engaging in Telemental Health services.
  • Utilize best practices forms and templates for effective Telemental Health practice
  • Understand the key competencies of effective Telemental Health services.
  • Understand the key clinical and ethical issues related to effective termination when using Telemental Health services.
  • Comprehend how to select the Telemental Health model(s) that is best for you.
  • Apply course content to your clinical skills through the use of the training materials in discussions, exercises and role plays based in the course content and materials


About the Presenters
