Trauma Therapy: What It Is, Why It Matters, and When It Is Needed
Central Region Monthly Webinar Series
Tuesday, November 12, 2024 - 5-6 pm CT via Zoom
Speaker: Laura Hanley, MSW, LICSW
1 CEU - may be counted as Clinical
Please join us to learn the basics of trauma therapy, including how it is different from talk therapy, the basic theoretical underpinnings, the basic treatment modalities, and when to know if your client would benefit from it (or not). Laura will also cover how to find a trauma therapist and different resources/networks that can be utilized.
Trauma therapy is designed to help individuals heal from traumatic experiences, distinct from general talk therapy. While talk therapy focuses on discussing thoughts and behaviors, trauma therapy addresses the specific effects of trauma on the brain and emotions.
Trauma impacts brain function, which in turn affects an individual's ability to relate to others. Understanding this connection is key to comprehending some of the challenging behaviors observed in clients. Providers should be familiar with the fundamental neuroscience underlying our current knowledge of trauma and the various interventions available to effectively address it. This talk will cover the basics of IFS, somatic processing, and bilateral stimulation-based interventions. Participants will also learn how to identify, connect with, and work effectively with a trauma therapist.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to speak to 3-5 key differences between traditional talk therapy and trauma therapy.
2. Participants will be able to identify 3-4 trauma-specific interventions for individuals seeking healing.
3. Participants will be able to name 3-5 key indicators that a client may benefit from trauma focused therapy.
