Recognizing and Working through Anti-Blackness in Clinical Settings

In this interactive virtual workshop, participants will first receive a definition of anti-Blackness, as well as a history of anti-Blackness in the United States. Special attention will be paid to the role of anti-Blackness in two of the most disturbing contemporary challenges facing Black people in the United States: police brutality and COVID-19. Moving forward with the understanding that interrogating the connection between our personal and non-personal lives is critical, attendees will then be guided through an experience meant to reflect upon the role of anti-Blackness in their personal lives. Finally, attendees will be led through an exploration of skill-based practices on how best to work alongside the systemic challenges of anti-Blackness in clinical settings through the examination of case vignettes.

About the Presenter
Shari L. Johnson is both a social worker and an anthropologist by educational training. After a 10-year career as a professional social worker and a private practice working solely with older adults, Shari began her unexpected teaching career. For several decades now, she has created and taught a wide variety of social work courses and professional development workshops primarily in aging, DE&I (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion), Queer studies, race and social justice, as well as cultural anthropology courses at several institutions across Michigan and Massachusetts. As the sole proprietor for The Traveling Diversity Professor consultation & training services, Shari currently resides in St. Paul, MN with her orange half-moon Beta fish named Zoranj (“orange” in Haitian Creole) and way too many house plants!​​​​​​​
