Mandated reporting is a professional responsibility for all helping professionals. Despite our best intentions, and our belief in evidence-based practice, mandated reporting remains one of the few areas in which professionals do not regularly examine best practices or look beyond their perceived legal and ethical obligations. How do we incorporate all that we know about trauma, relationships, and ethical, evidence-based practice into our legal duty as mandated reporters?

In this training, professionals will learn alternatives to mandated reporting that can prevent child maltreatment, promote family preservation, and maintain client rapport. Participants will be asked to take a critical eye to the legal and ethical implications of the decision to report and consider ways in which these decisions have impact for families, and for our professions, beyond the reporting call.

About the Presenter

Miriam Itzkowitz, MSW, LICSW is the Director of Trauma-Informed Care at the Institute to Transform Child Protection at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. In this role, she develops and implements best practices for the intersection of legal services and trauma-responsive care. Miriam's clinical experience is in counseling adults and adolescents in clinical, home, and school settings. In her work at her practice, IS Counseling, Miriam uses an eclectic approach to individual and couples therapy, incorporating cognitive, creative and holistic techniques to assist clients in sustaining authentic identities, coping with difficulties and overcoming trauma.

Social workers work across generational lines and in multi-generational teams to do their work. In this session, Karen Goodenough, MSW, LGSW, Executive Director of NASW-MN will help us uncover the history and potential of our multi-generational workforce, and think about how we can harness our strengths as we tackle what's next!

Rural Ethical Decision-Making in Complicated Times

As our world and our work become more complicated, so do the ethical dilemmas that we face.  This session will include an updated look at our ethical standards and obligations under the NASW Code of Ethics and State Licensure, and a refresher on the basic principles underlying ethical thinking. 

Participants will: 
1) Learn to differentiate legal, moral and ethical dilemmas;
2) Discuss and apply a model for analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas; and
3) Have opportunities to share case examples for discussion.

About the Presenter

Karen Goodenough, MSW, LGSW, is Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers, MN Chapter. She received her BSW from St. Olaf College, MSW from Augsburg College, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D in social work at the University of Minnesota. Karen is a community faculty member in the Masters of Social Work Program at the University of Minnesota teaching macro practice courses in Program Development, Leadership, Budgeting, Fundraising, and Social Policy. Previously Karen was Director of Youth and Family programs for a non-profit in North Minneapolis for 12 years, worked as a consultant helping organizations collect and utilize meaningful data and facilitating strategic planning, and served as adjunct faculty in the MSW programs at Augsburg College, the University of St. Thomas/St. Catherine, St. Cloud State University, and St. Olaf College.
