This presentation will consider the role of religion in the African American community and the appeal of religiously abusive organizations. The characteristics of religiously abusive organizations will be discussed along with case study examples of families who joined these organizations. Implications for professional practice and strategies to thoughtfully engage with families seeking cohesion and stronger relationships after leaving a religiously abusive organization will also be examined.
