NASW-MN Statement on the Killing of Alex Pretti and Updated Community Resource List

We are heartbroken and outraged by the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, community member, and caregiver who was fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026. Mr. Pretti’s life was dedicated to healing others — caring for veterans and contributing to the health and wellbeing of our community. He died as he lived, striving to protect others from harm.

We cannot continue, day after day, to make these statements condemning the latest killing of a dearly beloved member of our community by federal agents.  ICE agents have attempted to justify these acts with claims that their lives are under threat, while the reality shows that not a single ICE agent has been killed by an immigrant since the agency’s inception in 2008. Meanwhile, day after day more and more reports pour in detailing grave harm to members of our community.  ICE Agents shooting unarmed citizens, ICE Agents striking people with their vehicles, ICE Agents slipping on the ice and discharging a weapon because they safety wasn’t on, ICE Agents baiting family with their own preschooler.  These are not the actions of law enforcement agents upholding the law, these are the violent actions of an invading force with no respect for the lives and human dignity of our friends, neighbors, and community members that they are terrorizing.

As Social Workers, we must always stand up for the safety and dignity of the communities we serve, and it is in that spirit that we stand with Gov. Walz in demanding that federal agencies remove ICE agents from Minnesota immediately.
