NASW-MN Call for Board Nominations!


NASW Minnesota Chapter is seeking members from across the state with varied experience and expertise to help lead and represent our Chapter! Previous board or leadership experience is not required. All nominees will be asked to complete a brief application, and those slated on the ballot will be voted upon by Chapter Election in May.

POSITION DETAILS & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Board Positions (Term varies by position)

Our Board provides vision and leadership for the Chapter, conducting business in accordance with our Chapter Charter and national standards for Chapter operations. As a governing/programmatic board (without fiduciary responsibilities), Board members participate in decision-making to fulfill the mission of the Chapter, and actively engage as leaders and participants in ensuring our programming is carried out. 

 

Shared Responsibilities for All Board Members

  1. Attend Board meetings each quarter; the Board currently meets in Sept., Nov., Feb. & May for 2-3 hours in the evening.
  2. Develop programs aligned with Delegate Assembly program priority goals, the Association’s strategic goals and Chapter membership needs. 
  3. Establish and dissolve committees and task forces based on Chapter program and administrative needs. 
  4. Ensure that the Chapter adheres to policies as set forth in the framework of NASW public, professional, and organizational policies. 
  5. Represent the Chapter in the community to maintain its relationship with other organizations. 
  6. Ensure the development and implementation of membership recruitment and retention programs. 
  7. Attend NASW events and represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President or staff.
  8. Provide leadership in defining and implementing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions.
  9. Engage in membership recruitment and retention activities as requested by Membership Committee, President, and staff.
  10. Bring issues pertaining to Social Workers to the attention of the Board and Executive Director. 
  11. Provide to the Chapter Committee on Nominations and Leadership Inquiry (CCNLI) names of possible candidates for Chapter positions and provide names of possible nominees for Chapter awards to the Executive Committee.

 

Board Member Duties by Position

 

At Large Board Members (2-year term)

  1. Provide leadership to the assigned Chapter committee/workgroup based upon elected position – Political Action for Candidate Election (PACE), Social Policy Action Network (SPAN), Membership, or Ethics.
  2. Spend a minimum of 2 hours per month working on elected area of Chapter programming.
  3. Lead special projects or initiatives assigned by the Board or staff in relation to elected position.

 

BSW & MSW Student Representatives (1-year term)

  1. Identify and recruit student members.
  2. Distribute information on NASW-MN activities to schools of social work and encourage involvement of students.
  3. Assist Chapter leadership and Executive Director in planning NASW functions targeted to social work students.
  4. Co-chair Student Affinity Group to identify issues and concerns of students and advocate for their best interests.

 

Regional Representatives (2-year term)

  1. Represents the interests, concerns, and activities of their geographic area.
  2. Coordinate local training and networking opportunities; this may include recruiting presenters and/or volunteers to help coordinate presentations.
  3. Coordinate a local activity/event for Social Work Month (March).
  4. Report regularly to Board President and Executive Director on local activities.
  5. Communicate with the Board President and Executive Director as needed.
  6. Serve as a local ambassador to encourage members to be active in NASW.
  7. Conduct outreach to recruit new members and partners.
  8. Identify issues and concerns of their constituency and advocate in the constituency’s best interests. 
  9. Build and maintain relationships with schools of social work in their region.
  10. Actively participate in at least one Chapter committee.

 

Vice President (2 year term)

  1. Fulfills the duties of the President in the event of absence or disability and assumes the presidency upon the President’s resignation or inability to discharge the office. 
  2. Oversees the Chapter Diversity Plan, including the annual progress reporting. 
  3. Chairs the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee. 
  4. Attend NASW functions as feasible and represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President. 
  5. Provide leadership in defining and implementing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions. 
  6. Serves as the primary liaison between the Chapter Board and the executive director on the financial matters of the Chapter, including the review of the Chapter’s budget and financial reports with the Chapter Board. 
  7. Ensures adherence to the financial policies and practices required by the National Office or approved by the NASW National Board, and performs other duties as assigned by the President. 

 

Shared responsibility of all Executive Committee members

  1. Responsible for Board actions between Board meetings.
  2. Work to ensure that all Board members are engaged in supporting the Chapter in between Board meetings.
  3. Fill gaps in committee leadership not filled by other Board members.
